This page explains which personal data is processed when you visit florian-kraemer.net, why, and which rights you have. The site is a personal website with articles; it has no user accounts, no comments and no contact form.

Hosting (GitHub Pages)

This site is hosted by GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. When you open a page, your browser sends technical data to GitHub’s servers, in particular your IP address, the date and time of the request, the requested page, the referrer, and your browser and operating system. GitHub needs this data to deliver the site and to keep it secure, and may store it in server logs.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; my legitimate interest is a reliable and secure delivery of this website. Data may be transferred to the USA. GitHub, Inc. is certified under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision (Art. 45 GDPR). Details: GitHub General Privacy Statement.

If you agree in the consent banner, this site uses Google Analytics 4, a web analytics service of Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland (“Google”). I use it to see which articles are read and how visitors find the site.

Google Analytics sets cookies (_ga, _ga_<ID>) that store a pseudonymous identifier for up to two years. It processes, among other things, the pages you visit, the time spent on them, the referring website, your browser, operating system, screen size, and your approximate location derived from your IP address. According to Google, IP addresses are not logged or stored in Google Analytics 4. The data may be transferred to Google LLC in the USA; Google LLC is certified under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

The legal basis is your consent according to Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and § 25(1) TDDDG. Without your consent, Google Analytics is not loaded and no request is sent to Google. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” signal, this is treated as a refusal.

You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future: use the link “Privacy settings” at the bottom of every page and choose “Decline”. Google Analytics is then switched off and its cookies are deleted.

Your choice in the consent banner (“Accept” or “Decline”) is saved in your browser’s local storage under the key fk-consent-analytics, so that the banner does not appear on every page. This value stays in your browser and is not sent to me or to anyone else. It is stored until you change your choice or delete your browser data.

Storing this value is strictly necessary to respect your choice (§ 25(2) No. 2 TDDDG); the legal basis is Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 7(1) GDPR, which requires me to be able to demonstrate consent.

YouTube Videos

Some articles contain YouTube videos. They are shown as a placeholder, and nothing is loaded from YouTube until you click play. Only after your click is the player loaded from youtube-nocookie.com, a service of Google Ireland Limited. From then on, YouTube receives your IP address and technical data about your browser, and may set cookies or use similar technologies; data may be transferred to Google LLC in the USA.

The legal basis is your consent by clicking play (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, § 25(1) TDDDG). Alternatively, you can use the link “Watch on YouTube” below each video. Details: Google Privacy Policy.

Contacting Me by Email

If you send me an email, I process your email address, your name if given, and the content of your message to answer your request. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, or Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if your request concerns a contract. I delete your message when it is no longer needed, unless statutory retention periods apply.

The email address shown on this site is an alias of the email forwarding service addy.io, operated by AnonAddy Ltd, United Kingdom, which forwards messages to my mailbox. The European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision for the United Kingdom (Art. 45 GDPR).

Fonts, Scripts and Diagrams

The fonts (Barlow, Barlow Condensed, IBM Plex Mono) and all scripts, including the Mermaid diagram library, are delivered from this website itself. No connection to Google Fonts, content delivery networks or other third parties is made for them.

Articles link to other websites. When you follow such a link, the privacy policy of that website applies.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • access the personal data I process about you (Art. 15 GDPR),
  • have incorrect data corrected (Art. 16 GDPR),
  • have your data deleted (Art. 17 GDPR) or its processing restricted (Art. 18 GDPR),
  • receive your data in a portable format (Art. 20 GDPR),
  • withdraw a consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR).

Right to object: Where processing is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, you can object to it at any time for reasons arising from your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR).
